Troubleshooting
Most problems in Koona Pin come with a message that says what happened. This page explains those messages and what to do, and ends with how to ask for help.
Saving from the browser fails#
The browser status at the bottom of the sidebar, and Settings → Browser, tell you which case you have:
| It says | What to do |
|---|---|
| Browser connected | Nothing: it works. |
| No browser yet | Install the extension from the downloads page and save a page. The status updates after the first save, or by itself within half an hour. |
| Silent for 3 days (or another number) | Open your browser and check that Koona Pin is switched on in its extensions page. |
| Update the extension | The extension doesn’t match this Koona Pin. Update it in your browser. |
| Update Koona Pin | The extension is newer than the app. Update Koona Pin. |
| Capture isn’t working | Koona Pin itself can’t receive links: see Koona Pin says capture isn’t working. |
Links you save while something is wrong are not lost. They wait in the extension, which sends them again about once a minute and whenever the browser starts. To see them, choose Settings and queue in the menu of the extension’s button: the list Waiting to be sent has Send now and Remove, and Check again tests the connection.
The extension can’t reach the app#
- “Koona Pin isn’t installed”: the browser can’t find the part of Koona Pin that connects it to the app. On Windows and Linux, reinstall Koona Pin (on Linux, the
.debor.rpmpackage; an AppImage sets the connection up each time you start it). On a Mac, start Koona Pin once; if Safari says Koona Pin isn’t installed or its installation is damaged, reinstall the app. - “Koona Pin doesn’t accept this extension”: the app doesn’t know this copy of the extension. Install the extension from the downloads page or your browser’s store.
- “Saving isn’t available in this browser” on Linux: see Linux notes.
Also check that the extension is on and the browser is recent enough:
- Chrome and Edge 120 or later:
chrome://extensionsoredge://extensions. - Firefox 140 or later:
about:addons. - Safari 18.4 or later: Safari → Settings → Extensions. Switch Koona Pin on, then in Edit Websites… choose Allow for other websites.
Koona Pin says capture isn’t working#
Settings → Browser shows the reason, with Try again and Copy report. The same problem shows as a banner over your library and in the bell.
- Another program, or another copy of Koona Pin, holds the channel the app listens on. Close it, or restart Koona Pin.
- Koona Pin couldn’t register with the browsers. Press Try again; if it fails, reinstall Koona Pin.
- A part of Koona Pin is missing. Reinstall it.
The library won’t open#
If Koona Pin can’t open your library, it shows a screen instead of your links, and doesn’t change the file. The title says why:
| Title | What to do |
|---|---|
| The library is in use by another program | Close the other program (or a second copy of Koona Pin), then press Try again. |
| A newer version of Koona Pin has updated this library | Install the latest version from the downloads page. |
| This is not a Koona Pin library | Press Open data folder, move that file out, and start Koona Pin again: a new library is created. |
| The library file cannot be read or The library is damaged | Press Restore from backup… and pick the latest copy. The damaged file is kept in the backups folder. |
| Could not back up the library before updating it | Read the reason, fix it (for example, free disk space), and press Try again. |
| Could not update the library | Press Copy report and send it to support@koona.app. Koona Pin doesn’t use the library until this is fixed. |
| Could not open the library | Read the reason and press Try again. If it keeps failing, send the report. |
Details shows the report. For backups and restoring, see Import, export and backups.
Messages while you work#
- Another program is using the library. Try again in a few seconds. Wait, then repeat what you did.
- The disk is full — the changes were not saved. Free some space, then repeat.
- The library is damaged and open read-only — changes are not saved. A banner over your links offers Restore… and Open backups folder. Restore the latest good copy. Links from the browser wait in the extension meanwhile.
A page won’t open in reading mode#
Reading mode downloads the page and cuts out the article. When it can’t, it says why: the site could not be reached or took too long, it answered with an error (it may let only browsers in), no article was found (the page may be drawn by scripts), the page is mostly links, the link is a file, or the address leads into a private network.
The card then offers Open in browser, and Next to carry on with the queue. If you are offline, it says No connection with Try again, and Koona Pin tries again by itself once you are back online.
To read without a connection, choose Save for offline in the card menu first. See Reading mode.
Feeds don’t update#
A feed with trouble says so in its row and at the top of its list:
- Not updating since… The feed hasn’t answered for some time. After a week, the bell says so, with Show and Unfollow.
- The site doesn’t let the app in. The site refuses automatic readers; Koona Pin can’t change that.
- The feed is gone from the site. You can unfollow it.
- The feed has moved to a new address. Choose Update the address in the feed’s menu.
- Offline. Feeds update again when you are back online.
To check right away, press CtrlR⌘R on the Feeds page. If Check for new posts in Settings is set to Manually, feeds update only when you ask. To start over, use Clear feed cache in Settings, under Feeds. See Feeds.
Other problems in the library#
- A link has no picture or site name: refresh its preview. See Refresh previews.
- Search misses a bookmark: check that no tag or site filter is narrowing the list, then rebuild the search index. See Search.
- Sync is paused or waiting: the sync line in Settings says why. See When sync pauses or waits.
Updates fail#
When an update fails, your current version keeps working and nothing is changed.
- Couldn’t check: no connection. Koona Pin tries again tomorrow, or press Check for updates in Settings once you are online.
- The download stopped: no connection to koona.app. Check the connection and try again.
- The downloaded file isn’t signed by Koona, so it wasn’t installed. Try again later. If it keeps happening, download the installer from the downloads page.
- The password wasn’t entered (Linux). Try again and enter your password when the system asks.
- Linux couldn’t install the package. Download the new version from the site and install it yourself.
Linux notes#
- Supported systems. Linux builds are 64-bit and made for GNOME and KDE Plasma on Wayland.
- No tray icon. GNOME shows the tray icon only with the AppIndicator extension. Without it, closing the window only hides it and Koona Pin keeps running, so links still arrive. Start Koona Pin from the app menu to bring the window back, and quit with CtrlQ⌘Q or Quit in Settings.
- Browsers in a sandbox. Browsers installed from Flatpak, and Chromium from Snap, can’t reach Koona Pin. Use the browser from your distribution’s packages or the vendor’s site. Firefox from Snap works: on the first save it asks whether Koona Pin may run; choose Allow.
Send feedback or report a problem#
Send feedback from the app#
- Open Settings and press Send feedback… under Support.
- Choose Bug, Idea or Question, and write your Message (up to 5,000 characters).
- Add an Email for a reply (optional) if you want an answer.
- Leave Attach report on to add a short report: your Koona Pin version, system and language, and the state of the browser connection. It has no links, titles, tags or notes. Show report shows it first.
- Press Send, or CtrlEnter⌘Return in the message field.
Nothing leaves your computer until you press Send. Feedback is stored in the EU for up to 12 months; see the privacy policy. If sending fails, your text stays in the form: try again later, or press Copy text and send it another way.
Open an issue on GitHub#
For bugs and ideas others can see and follow, press Issues on GitHub in Settings, or go to github.com/andmetoo/koona-pin/issues. Issues are public, so leave out private links and notes.
Write to support#
Email support@koona.app. For a problem with the browser connection or the library screen, paste the report from Copy report into your message.
Didn’t find the answer? Send feedback or write to support@koona.app.
