Search
Search finds bookmarks as you type. It runs on your computer and works offline.
Search your library#
- Press CtrlK⌘K, or click the search field at the top of the library. The shortcut works from anywhere in the app, such as Settings or Feeds, except in reading mode.
- Type. The list narrows with every letter, and the toolbar counts the matches, like 3 of 17.
- Press Esc to clear the words, and again to leave the field.
What is searched#
For each bookmark, search looks in the title, the site and the address (so part of a link works), the page’s description, your note and your tags.
How words match#
- Every word must match, in any order and in any of those places.
rust guidefinds a bookmark titled “Guide” that has the tagrust. - A word matches part of a word.
readfinds “readable” and “Spreadsheet”. Short words work the same way:gofinds “Go” and “google”. - Capital letters don’t matter, accents do.
cafedoesn’t find “café”. - There is no special syntax. Quotes,
*, AND and OR are searched as plain text.
Results follow the sort order you chose in the toolbar, not how well they match.
Search inside a section#
Search covers the section you have open, such as All bookmarks, Inbox, Favorites, Reading, Trash or a collection. Your words stay when you open another section, so you can check each one. A tag or site filter is cleared when you change sections.
If nothing matches inside a section, Search the whole library keeps your words and drops the section.
Narrow by a site or a tag#
Click the site name on a card or row to see only bookmarks from that site. A chip such as Site: example.com appears under the toolbar; click it to remove the filter.
Click a tag in the sidebar or on a row to see only that tag’s bookmarks, with a chip such as #design. Click the chip, or the tag again, to remove it.
A section, a site, a tag and words can all be combined: each one narrows the list further.
When nothing is found#
The page says Nothing matches with your words. Check the spelling, try a shorter piece of a word, or use fewer words, since every word must match.
Clear search (or Esc) clears your words and any tag or site filter. With only a filter on, the button reads Clear filters.
Search bookmarks you selected#
After a search, CtrlA⌘A selects every bookmark that matches, also those further down the list, so you can tag or move them all at once. See Select bookmarks.
If a bookmark is missing from search#
If you know a bookmark is in your library and search doesn’t find it:
- Check the section you are in and any tag or site chip.
- Open Settings, and under Data, click Rebuild next to Search index.
A note says how many bookmarks were indexed. Still missing? See Troubleshooting.
Other places to search#
- Feeds has its own Search posts, over the titles and excerpts of posts. See Feeds.
- The browser extension can search your library without opening the app. See Find a link from the browser.
