Reading mode

Keys for

Reading mode shows a saved page as an article: one column of text, no menus or banners, with your Reading list beside it. Koona Pin remembers where you stopped.

Point at a number on the picture, or tab to it, to see what that part does.

Add articles to Reading#

Reading is your list of bookmarks to read next, with no limit. To add one:

  • Select it and press R. In Reading, R takes it out again.
  • Choose Send to Reading in its card menu. In Reading, the item reads Remove from Reading.
  • Drag it onto Reading in the sidebar.
  • In your browser, use Save page to Reading, Save link to Reading or AltShiftR⌥⇧R. See Save to Reading.
  • In Feeds, press R on a post.

The bookmark stays where it was in your library; Reading only lists it.

Open a bookmark in reading mode#

Clicking a bookmark’s title, double-clicking it or pressing EnterReturn opens it in reading mode. To open links in the browser instead, change Open links in Settings.

Read in the toolbar opens Reading at the first article you haven’t read.

When you open a bookmark from a collection, a tag or a search, the queue shows that list. Click its name at the top of the queue to switch, under Read from, between it and Reading.

Tip: Select a bookmark and press Space to read it in a sheet over the library. ↑ and ↓ move through the selection, Esc closes it.

Find your way around#

The queue on the left lists what to read, with each article’s site, minutes and progress, such as “35 % read”. Read articles are dimmed with a check mark.

The article is on the right, with a thin progress line on top. The bar above it has:

  • Save offline, to keep a copy on your computer (see Save for offline),
  • Aa, for the text and theme,
  • Open in browser, for the original page,
  • Read, to go back to the library.

In a narrow window, the queue hides behind a Queue button.

Koona Pin keeps your place as you scroll. When you reach the end, the article counts as read and moves to the bottom of Reading. A week later it leaves Reading; the bookmark stays in your library. To turn this off, use Mark as read at the end in Settings.

Keys#

Key What it does
J / K Next and previous article
Tab Move between the queue and the article
↑ / ↓ In the queue: the previous or next article. In the article: scroll
Space Scroll the article down
O Open the page in your browser
Backspace⌫ or Del⌫ Take the article out of Reading and go on to the next
Esc From the article, go to the queue. From the queue, back to the library
CtrlZ⌘Z Undo taking an article out of Reading

Change text size, font and theme#

Click Aa in the bar to open Text and theme:

  • Text size, from 15 to 24 px,
  • Column: Narrow, Medium or Wide,
  • Theme: White, Dark, Paper or Sepia,
  • Font: Serif or Sans.

Until you pick a theme, reading follows the app’s light or dark theme. Your choices are kept on this computer and apply to posts in Feeds too.

Supporter: Paper and Sepia come with Supporter. Without it they show a lock. See Sync and Supporter.

When a page can’t be shown#

Some pages can’t be turned into an article: a site may let only browsers in, or the link may be a file or a page of links. Reading mode then says Can’t show this page in reading mode, with the reason when it knows it, and offers:

  • Open in browser,
  • Next (J),
  • Mark as read,
  • Remove, which takes it out of Reading.

Without a connection, it says No connection and tries again by itself once the computer is back online.

Save for offline#

An offline copy keeps an article’s text and pictures on your computer, so you can read it without a connection.

  • In reading mode, click Save offline in the bar. It then reads Saved offline; click it for Update copy or Remove copy.
  • In the library, choose Save for offline in the card menu, or press O while the menu is open. Later the item reads Remove offline copy.

Offline, a bookmark with a copy opens the copy, and a line under the bar says so. Try live page loads the original instead. Once you have a copy, Offline appears in the sidebar and lists every bookmark that has one.

Keep a copy of every article#

Turn on Save articles I open in Reading in Settings, under Offline copies. Each article from Reading you open in reading mode then keeps a copy. It is off by default. The same section shows how many copies you have and their size, with Show folder and Remove all copies. Removing copies never deletes bookmarks.

Note: Offline copies stay on this computer: they aren’t synced or exported.
