Settings
Open Settings at the bottom of the sidebar. Changes apply at once; there is no Save button.

General#
| Option | What it does |
|---|---|
| Language | System follows your computer, or pick one of 15 languages: English, Deutsch, Español, Français, Italiano, 日本語, 한국어, Polski, Português (Brasil), Русский, Српски (ћирилица), Srpski (latinica), Türkçe, Українська and 简体中文. Text not translated yet shows in English. |
| Theme | System, Light or Dark. Reading mode has its own themes in its Aa panel: see Reading mode. |
| Start with the system | Starts Koona Pin in the tray when you sign in to your computer, so links from the browser arrive right away. |
| Keep the app in the tray when the window is closed | On by default. Closing the window hides it, and Koona Pin keeps running in the tray (the menu bar on a Mac). Turned off, closing the window quits Koona Pin. |
| Quit Koona Pin | Quit, or CtrlQ⌘Q, quits the app completely. Links you save from the browser wait in the extension until the next start. |
The tray icon’s menu has Open Koona Pin and Quit.
Some Linux desktops, such as GNOME without the AppIndicator extension, have no tray icon. There the switch reads Keep running in the background when the window is closed. The first time you close the window, a dialog explains this and offers Hide window or Quit. To open the window again, start Koona Pin from your app menu.
Reading#
| Option | What it does |
|---|---|
| Open links | What a click on a title, a double-click and EnterReturn do: In browser, or In reading mode (the default). The buttons on a card’s cover always offer both. |
| Mark as read at the end | On by default. An article you finish moves to the bottom of Reading and leaves it after a week. |
| Send to Reading | A reminder, not a switch: R sends the selected bookmarks to Reading. |
Feeds#
| Option | What it does |
|---|---|
| Check for new posts | Every 30 minutes, 1 hour (the default), 3 hours or 12 hours, or Manually. The app fetches feeds itself, straight from the sites. |
| Unsaved posts are kept for 30 days | Information only. Save a post to keep it as a bookmark. |
| Feeds file (OPML) | Export… and Import… move your feeds to or from another reader. |
| Clear feed cache | Clear fetches the posts again. Saved ones stay in your library. |
See Feeds.
Offline copies#
Offline copies keep an article’s text and pictures on this computer, to read without a connection. They are not synced and not in exports.
| Option | What it does |
|---|---|
| Saved for offline | How many articles are saved and how much space they take. Show folder opens the folder. |
| Save articles I open in Reading | Off by default. Keeps a copy of each article from Reading you open in reading mode. |
| Remove all copies | Remove… deletes every offline copy after you confirm. The bookmarks stay. |
Updates#
The row shows your version and when Koona Pin last checked. It checks once a day and never installs anything unless you agree.
- Check for updates checks now. Without a connection it says so and tries again tomorrow.
- Changelog opens what changed.
- When a new version is out, the row reads Version X is available with Update…, and the sidebar shows an Update available row that opens the same dialog.
The update dialog#
- It shows what’s new, with a Full changelog link. Press Update to download, or Later.
- While it downloads, Hide lets you keep working; the sidebar shows the progress. Cancel download stops it.
- Koona Pin checks that the file is signed by Koona, then restarts to install it. On Linux, the system asks for your password to install the package. Links from the browser wait in the extension meanwhile.
Your library, settings and browser connection stay as they are. If the update fails, your current version keeps working; see Troubleshooting.
Browser#
Shows whether the browser extension is connected, for example Connected: Chrome, and when it last saved a page. Connect another browser (or Connect, when none is connected yet) shows the steps. When something is wrong, the section explains it and offers the fix: see Troubleshooting.
AI assistants#
Let AI assistants use your library is off until you turn it on. Then you choose What assistants may do (Read only or Read and add), and How to connect… next to Connect an assistant shows the steps for each app. See AI assistants.
Data#
| Option | What it does |
|---|---|
| Sync | With Supporter: whether sync is on, with Set up… or Manage…. Without it, the row reads Sync — with Supporter, with Learn more. See Sync and Supporter. |
| Library folder | Where the library file is. Open shows it in your file manager. |
| Backups | How many backup copies there are and their size; Koona Pin keeps 7 daily and 4 weekly. Open folder opens them. |
| Last backup | When the last backup was made. Save a copy… saves one to another drive or a cloud folder; Back up now makes one right away. |
| Restore from a backup | Restore… puts the library back to how it was in a copy you pick. |
| Search index | Rebuild it if search misses a bookmark that is in the library. See Search. |
| Refresh previews | Refresh… reads pages again for their picture, icon and site name. See Clean up your library. |
A backup is the whole library exactly as it was, for Koona Pin. To move bookmarks into another library or program, use Export instead. Backups, restores and the file locations are explained on Import, export and backups.
Support#
- Send feedback… writes to the developer: a bug, an idea or a question.
- Issues on GitHub opens the public reports of the Koona Pin project.
- Licenses lists the fonts, icons and libraries Koona Pin is built with.
How feedback works, and what the report holds: see Send feedback or report a problem.
Notifications#
There is no notifications option in Settings. What needs your attention collects in the bell at the top of the sidebar (more about the bell):
- new links waiting in Inbox, with Sort and Hide until new bookmarks arrive;
- the offer to import bookmarks from your browser, in a new library;
- problems with saving from the browser, which stay until they are fixed;
- new posts of feeds set to Also notify me in their Where new posts go menu, and feeds that haven’t updated for a week, with Show and Unfollow;
- refreshing previews, with its progress and Stop, and links the link check found.
A number on the bell counts what’s new; it turns amber when there is a problem. Clear all dismisses what can be dismissed.
Library view and sort order#
These aren’t in Settings: the view (Grid, Compact grid or List) and the sort order are buttons in the toolbar. See Organize your library.
