Feeds

Keys for

Follow a site once, and Koona Pin checks it for new posts and lists them in Feeds. Nothing lands in your library until you save it.

Point at a number on the picture, or tab to it, to see what that part does.

Feeds in three columns: followed feeds in the sidebar, a list of posts, and the open post on the right
  1. All feeds Posts of every site you follow, newest first. The number counts new ones.
  2. A feed One site you follow, with its count of new posts.
  3. Check for new posts Fetches every feed now instead of waiting for the next check.
  4. The open post A dot marks posts you haven't read yet.
  5. Expand Spreads the post over the list. E
  6. Save, Read later, Favorite The plus saves the post to your library (S), the book also sends it to Reading (R), the heart adds it to Favorites (F).
  7. Open in browser, Aa The link opens the post on its site (O). Aa sets the text.

Follow a site#

Koona Pin follows RSS, Atom and JSON feeds.

  1. Click New link at the top of the sidebar, or the + next to Feeds.
  2. Paste the site’s address.
  3. If the site has a feed, the sheet says so. Turn on the Follow switch. If the site has several feeds, pick one beside the switch.
  4. Under New posts go to, choose where new posts land (see below).
  5. Click Save and follow. The page is saved as a bookmark too.

Paste the address of a feed itself, and the button reads Follow: it follows the feed without making a bookmark.

Once you turn on the switch, the sheet shows how often the feed posts, like “About 2 new posts a day”, or This feed can’t be read if it can’t read it.

To follow many feeds at once, import an OPML file or a shareable list with feeds.

Where new posts go#

  • Feeds only: they appear in Feeds and nowhere else. This is the default.
  • Sort them like Inbox: each new post is also saved to your Inbox, to sort with your other links. See Inbox and triage.
  • Also notify me: they appear in Feeds, and the bell tells you about them.

To change it later, choose Where new posts go in the feed’s menu.

Read your feeds#

Open All feeds in the sidebar, or one feed. Feeds has three columns: your feeds, the list of posts by day, and the open post.

A dot marks an unread post, and the number beside each feed counts its unread posts. A post you open is marked read after a second. Posts you saved say “saved”.

Click a post, or press EnterReturn on it, to read it. Next story and Previous story at the end of a post take you on. In a wide window, Expand (E) above the post spreads it over the list.

Some feeds send only a summary. Load the full article fetches the whole page from the site, only when you click it.

To search posts, click Search posts (the magnifier) above the list: it looks through titles and excerpts. To check for new posts now, click Check for new posts or press CtrlR⌘R.

Posts use your reading look. Click Aa above the post to change it; see Reading mode.

Save a post#

A post becomes a bookmark only when you save it, with the buttons above the post:

  • Save (S) puts it in your library.
  • Read later (R) saves it and sends it to Reading.
  • Favorite (F) saves it and adds it to Favorites.

The note has Undo. A post that’s already in your library isn’t saved twice.

Note: Unsaved posts are kept for 30 days, then they go. Feed posts stay on this computer: they aren’t synced or exported.

Check for new posts#

Koona Pin fetches feeds itself, straight from the sites, about once an hour. To change how often, open Settings and choose under Check for new posts: 30 minutes, 1, 3 or 12 hours, or Manually. With Manually, feeds update only when you click Check for new posts or press CtrlR⌘R.

Manage your feeds#

Point at a feed in the sidebar and click its ⋯ button to open the feed’s menu:

  • Rename… sets your own name. Leave it empty to use the feed’s own name.
  • Where new posts go changes the setting above.
  • Mark all read marks every post of the feed read.
  • Copy feed address copies the feed’s address, and Open site opens the site in your browser.
  • Unfollow… stops following the feed. Its posts leave Feeds; posts you saved stay in your library.

Feeds have no folders: folders in an imported file aren’t kept.

When a feed stops working#

A small dot beside the feed, and a line above its posts, say what is wrong:

  • The site doesn’t let the app in: the site may refuse automatic readers.
  • The feed is gone from the site.
  • The feed has moved to a new address: choose Update the address in the feed’s menu to follow it there.
  • Not updating since a date. After a week without an answer, the bell also tells you, with Show and Unfollow.

If posts look stale, Clear feed cache in Settings, under Feeds, fetches them again. Saved posts stay in your library.

Import and export feeds#

Feeds move to and from other readers as an OPML file. In Settings, under Feeds, find Feeds file (OPML):

  • Export… saves the feeds you follow.
  • Import… follows the feeds in an OPML file. Feeds you already follow stay as they are. Addresses that aren’t valid, or that point to this computer or your local network, are skipped.

You can also choose Import a file… in the ⋯ menu, or drop the file on the list. See Import, export and backups.
