Clean up your library

Keys for

Over time a library collects doubles, dead links and pictures that never loaded. Koona Pin helps you tidy up, and it never changes anything on its own: every clean-up starts when you ask and ends with your confirmation.

The tools are under Clean up in the ⋯ menu of the toolbar, and in Settings.

Find and merge duplicates#

Choose Duplicates under Clean up. The menu shows how many groups of doubles there are, and while there are any, Duplicates also appears in the sidebar with that count. Without any, the page says No duplicates.

What counts as the same page#

Two bookmarks are the same page when their addresses differ only in:

  • http or https, and a leading www.
  • a slash at the end, or a #part
  • tracking tags such as utm_source or fbclid
  • the order of the other parameters

So https://www.example.com/page/?utm_source=news and http://example.com/page#top are one page. Bookmarks in Trash don’t count.

Choose the main bookmark and merge#

Each group lists its bookmarks with the main one marked Main: by default the one with the plainest address, then the oldest. Click another row to make it the main one. The line After merging says what will be kept.

  • Merge merges one group.
  • Merge all… merges every group, after a confirmation that says how many bookmarks become how many.
  • Not duplicates hides a group you want to keep as it is. It comes back only if another bookmark with the same address arrives.

The main bookmark takes in what the others held: every tag, every note (joined one after another), the favorite heart, a collection if it had none, and the earliest saving date. The others go to Trash, where they stay for 30 days. CtrlZ⌘Z undoes the merge.

Choose Link check under Clean up, then press Check N links. Koona Pin opens the address of each bookmark once, like a browser, without loading the page; each site sees an ordinary request from your computer. You can keep working. Stop ends the check, what it found so far is kept, and Continue picks up again.

Links to your own computer or local network are not requested. If the connection drops, the check pauses and doesn’t mark the links it couldn’t reach.

Read the results#

While a check has found links to decide on, Link check appears in the sidebar with a count. If everything opens, the page says All links open.

Group What it means What you can do
Don’t open The site answered that the page is gone (404 or 410). Open it to see for yourself. Move to Trash, or Move all to Trash.
Moved The page moved for good (301 or 308) and opens at a new address. Replace address, or Replace all. Notes, tags and collection stay. If the new address is already saved, it isn’t replaced.
Couldn’t check No answer in 10 seconds, a server error, or a site that refuses automatic requests. Not counted as broken. Check again later, or open the link yourself.

Nothing is deleted on its own: Trash keeps links for 30 days, and CtrlZ⌘Z undoes a trash or a replaced address. Press Check again whenever you want a fresh run.

Refresh previews#

A preview is a bookmark’s picture, icon and site name. Refreshing reads the page again to fill them in; your titles, notes and tags stay.

  • One bookmark: choose Refresh preview in its card menu.
  • Selected bookmarks: choose Refresh previews on the selection bar.
  • Many or all: in Settings, under Data, press Refresh… next to Refresh previews, then choose Only without a picture or site name or All bookmarks. Each choice shows how many bookmarks it covers.

Progress shows in the bell, with Stop. At the end, the bell says how many were updated, unchanged, or couldn’t be opened. Pages that couldn’t be opened go to the link check by themselves; if it finds links that need a look, the bell offers Show them.

Trash and undo#

Deleted bookmarks wait in Trash for 30 days: see Inbox and triage. CtrlZ⌘Z undoes your recent changes, such as a merge, a trash or a replaced address, until you quit the app: see Undo a change.
